"notes": "The AK-12 is a Russian assault rifle chambered in 5.45×39mm. It is designed and manufactured by Kalashnikov Concern (formerly Izhmash) and is currently the latest of the Russian AK-Pattern series of assault rifles.\n\nKalashnikov Concern also offers the rifle in 7.62×39mm cartridge, designated as the AK-15. A short-barreled variants of the AK-12 and AK-15 have been announced, respectively the AK-12K and AK-15K.\n\nThe AK-12 project began in 2011 by the IZHMASH factory which became part of the Kalashnikov Concern as a private venture, in an attempt to participate in the \"Ratnik\" trials which were held by the Russian Army. It was further developed by Kalashnikov Concern, and throughout its development and evaluation stage it has received multiple modifications to meet the Russian military's standard and to address the Russian Army's concerns regarding the cost and issues in fully automatic fire of the earlier prototype models. It went through several revisions in order to improve upon the \"range of defects\" that were discovered on the earlier prototype models that were derived from the AK-200. These were later abandoned in favour for the proven and improved AK-400, which became the finalised model of the AK-12.\n\nThe final production model of the AK-12 is based on the well-proven AK-400 prototype. The rifle is chambered in 5.45×39mm and due to the Russian military requirements, Kalashnikov Concern also offers the rifle in 7.62×39mm cartridge, designated as the AK-15. Short-barreled versions of the AK-12 and AK-15 are also being worked on, designated as the AK-12K and AK-15K.\n\nWith the final production model, it addresses the Russian Army's concerns regarding the issues in fully automatic fire and the cost of the earlier prototype models and is also expected to be much cheaper to build. It also incorporates many of the same improvements developed for the earlier prototype models of the AK-12 but also improves the strength and resilience of some of the components of the rifle.\n\nThe final production model of the AK-12 has retained the traditional Kalashnikov gas-operated long-stroke piston system with a rotating bolt. The rifle features an integrated Picatinny rail on the top of the redesigned, detachable top cover for mounting various optics/scopes, the lower part of the handguard is also equipped with a Picatinny rail for various tactical accessories such as vertical grips, flashlights and lasers sights. The rifle has backup iron sights, consisting of a shrouded front post that is mounted on the gas block and an adjustable rear aperture sight that is installed on the removable base using the upper Picatinny rail. The rifle features an ergonomic pistol grip, a retractable side-folding shoulder stock which is adjustable for length of pull, a handguard with ventilation holes and an advanced muzzle brake. The rifle can also be fitted with a quick detachable sound suppressor and a bayonet. To further increase the combat effectiveness of the rifle, it can be equipped with a 40 mm GP-25/GP-34 single-shot underbarrel grenade launcher.\n\nThe design of the final production model of the AK-12 shares more in common with the existing AK-74M than its earlier prototype models, but will not be a retrofit to existing assault rifles. Several improvements were made to the AK-12's receiver, such as an improved and far more rigid top cover interface and a new free-floating barrel. The final production model of the AK-12 reportedly outperforms the existing AK-74 by at least the margin requested by the Russian government.\n\nThe final production model of the AK-12 has a cyclic rate of fire of 700 rounds per minute (RPM), which is 50–100 rounds per minute faster than the older Kalashnikov assault rifles and the cancelled prototypes of the AK-12.[36] The three-round hyper burst feature from the earlier prototype models was replaced by a two-round burst feature in the final production model as well.",

This ammunition has superior penetration and stopping power comparing with the Soviet 5.45x39 mm ammunition, or standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. The 7.62x39 mm ammunition is still used by the Russian military and law enforcement forces and is widely used around the world. Some operators prefer this caliber. There were also plans to chamber the AK-15 for a standard NATO 7.62x51 mm ammunition. Also the new weapon is better balanced and has improved ergonomics.\n\n  The AK-15 is a gas operated, selective fire weapon. Internally it follows the lines of the traditional Kalashnikov design. It has three positions for \"safe\", \"semi-automatic\", and \"fully-automatic\". However it uncomfortable to use and is not ambidextrous. Early prototypes of the AK-12 assault rifle had a new ambidextrous safety / fire mode selector switch, that could be operated by a thumb. However for some reason on later prototypes this arrangement was dropped in favor to traditional simple, reliable, but awkward fire mode selector.\n\n  This weapon is fed from 30-round capacity magazines. It is compatible with the standard 30-round magazines, of AK-103 and AKM, as well as 40-round box and 75-round drum magazines of the RPK light machine gun.\n\n  This assault rifle has a telescopic buttstock, which resembles that of the US M4 carbine. The buttstock can be adjusted for length. A new pistol grip is ergonomically-shaped.\n\n  This Russian assault rifle comes as standard with simple iron sights. It also has a full-length Picatinny-type scope rail and can mount various scopes, red dot sights and night vision sights. Range of effective fire is around 500 meters. Maximum range is 800 meters. Even though the AK-15 has improved accuracy over the AKM and AK-103, it is not as accurate as the latest Western assault rifles.\n\n  The AK-15 has an accessory rail on the foregrip and can mount vertical foregrip, tactical flashlight, laser pointer or other accessories. The assault rifle can also mount a knife-bayonet, silencer or GP-25/GP-34 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher.\n\n  The AK-15 was revealed alongside some other Russian weapons, developed by Kalashnikov Concer, such as a new compact assault rifle, that is a proposed replacement for the AKS-74U and RPK-16 light machine gun, a proposed replacement for the RPK-74 light machine gun.",

A combined safety / fire mode selector lever is similar to that used on the AK-74 and earlier Kalashnikov assault rifles. It has three positions for "safe", "semi-automatic", and "fully-automatic". It is compatible with the standard 30-round magazines, of AK-103 and AKM, as well as 40-round box and 75-round drum magazines of the RPK light machine gun. This assault rifle has a telescopic buttstock, which resembles that of the US M4 carbine. The buttstock can be adjusted for length. A new pistol grip is ergonomically-shaped. This Russian assault rifle comes as standard with simple iron sights. It also has a full-length Picatinny-type scope rail and can mount various scopes, red dot sights and night vision sights. Range of effective fire is around 500 meters. Maximum range is 800 meters. Even though the AK-15 has improved accuracy over the AKM and AK-103, it is not as accurate as the latest Western assault rifles. The AK-15 has an accessory rail on the foregrip and can mount vertical foregrip, tactical flashlight, laser pointer or other accessories. The assault rifle can also mount a knife-bayonet, silencer or GP-25/GP-34 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher. The AK-15 was revealed alongside some other Russian weapons, developed by Kalashnikov Concer, such as a new compact assault rifle, that is a proposed replacement for the AKS-74U and RPK-16 light machine gun, a proposed replacement for the RPK-74 light machine gun."
