Olvana is now encouraging enterprises to build infrastructure and conduct commercial trial voyages, paving the way for Arctic shipping routes that would form a “Polar Silk Road”. Olvana believes strongly in developing shipping lanes through the Arctic region that become open due to global warming. Along these lines, the country released its first Arctic policy white paper last January. A majority of Olvana’s interests in the region lie in its major stake in Donovia’s Yamal liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which is expected to supply China with four million tons of LNG a year. Shipping through the Northern Sea Route would shave almost 20 days off the regular time using the traditional route through the Suez Canal. The white paper said Olvana also targets development of oil, gas, mineral resources and other non-fossil energies, fishing and tourism in the region. | |
